About the client
Our client is an Australian startup founded by a Sydney-based entrepreneur who recognized the difficulties landlords and tenants face when managing rental relationships remotely. The company set out to build an online rental platform that would enable property owners across Australia to list homes, manage agreements, and handle related processes entirely online.
Challenge
The client wanted to launch an online rental platform for the Australian market that would allow landlords and tenants to manage rental agreements remotely. The key challenge was to create a service that could simplify tenancy management while addressing the legal and financial responsibilities typically associated with property rentals. At the same time, the client sought to deliver a feature-rich first version within a limited budget and accelerated timeline.
Project goals & challenges:
-
Enabling fully remote rental management and agreements.
-
Supporting legally compliant rental processes.
-
Protecting both parties throughout financial transactions and agreements.
-
Delivering an MVP with advanced functionality under strict budget and time constraints.
Solution
To balance functionality, delivery speed, and budget limitations, our team developed the web platform using Ruby on Rails and React, focusing on delivering an affordable MVP with core rental and property management management capabilities.
The first release included:
-
Property management tools. An admin panel that allows property owners to create, edit, and publish listings with descriptions, photo galleries, and rental terms.
-
Tenant-facing search and booking functionality. Property filtering, keyword search, and viewing appointment scheduling.
-
Digital contract workflow. Customizable rental agreement templates, automated agreement generation based on predefined rental terms, electronic signing, and contract notarization through the notary service API.
-
Built-in communication tools. An integrated chat enabling tenants and landlords to report issues, share photo evidence, coordinate repairs, and formalize related agreements through the platform.
-
Integrated payment supervision. A built-in payment system powered by Stripe supporting rental payments, deposit and prepayment management, and payment tracking. The platform was designed to hold security deposits and rental prepayments in accordance with agreed terms, releasing or refunding funds based on contract conditions and tenant actions.
-
Compliance and monitoring workflows. Legal and monitoring features supported through third-party API integrations, including automated notifications of payment delays to relevant law enforcement systems.
A small delivery team consisting of a UI/UX designer and two full-stack developers released the initial product version within three months.
Results
Our team delivered the first version of the online rental platform within a three-month timeframe, providing the client with a functional MVP tailored for the Australian rental market.
The released solution enabled landlords and tenants to manage rental processes remotely through a single web platform, including property listings, rental agreements, communication, and payment workflows. According to the client, the platform introduced a unique approach to remote tenancy management for the local market and demonstrated early user traction following launch.
